Your draiioncty search kind of confirms what I thought originally - that it's not only a strange word to use, but also archaic (I mean, come on - Thomas Mitchell?).Even if it is technically correct in one aspect of a definition, generally it's not a term that would make me think "Wow - must go and live in the *provinces*!!!"You realise that all of these new words to describe country Victoria came from some PC person who thought "country" was belittling?

Once I received a call offering me a decent sum to turn for a pianist for a chamber music concert. I was pleased to finally get paid for something I'd been doing pro bono for years. I got there early and met with the pianist. He seemed high-strung but some people are before a concert. I clarified repeat issues with him and he assured me he was a clear nodder.The concert began and I soon saw why he was so high-strung; his mediocre technique and limited musicality made him a bad choice to play the well-known Beethoven and Brahms trios he was tackling (almost literally, football player style). We got towards the end of the first page and he did not nod. I figured, Maybe he likes memorize the beginning of the next page and have late turns. Nope as we reached the last two beats he abruptly turned his heard toward me and, in a low, gruff voice barked, Turn! This disagreeable ritual was repeated for most of the performance. I thought it might have been less disruptive for him and the audience to nod as he said. No such luck. I made it through and didn't mess it up, but he really unnerved me and I dare say I was very deserving of my pay that evening.

Thanks for this, Matt. Being (mostly) cooped up idroons on the trainer and watching videos of past races has got me lusting a bit over carbon wunder-bikes. Training in such an isolated, artificial fashion seems to lead to a kind of cognitive dissonance. Imagining myself riding against the pros, battling it out with Nino and Julien for a world cup XC title, it becomes easy to believe all that separates *us* from *them* is their level of coaching, training, and equipment. Of course they have all those advantages, but by far the largest is genetics -- they are truly gifted freaks of nature.Cycling is different than most sports in that the amateurs can acutually come fairly close to imitating the pros -- we can ride the same bikes, wear the same clothes, and use the same training tools. However, all these technological toys are really just obfuscating the truth; that, as you say, no bicycle will compensate for an unfit body. Finally, having never actually ridden a carbon bike makes it that much easier to buy into the marketing hype... that such a machine would actually make a huge difference, allowing me to effortlessly float up the climbs and slice through the wind. The fact is, losing 20 lbs off my body would do more to speed me up than any bike ever could. Would a super high-end bike make me faster? Yes, by a small amount, but no more than a high-end kitchen would make one a better chef. Like that nice kitchen, though... I will one day spoil myself. At least when I do I'll be able to comfort myself with the fact that a $10k full carbon Di2 equipped bike is a far more affordable midlife crisis vehicle than an exotic sports car!

I'm turning for a recital of chamber music at Churchill College in Cambridge, UK. I've played and performed piano for 30 years but have rarely turned pages for others! One thing I’ve missed when working with IDA on microcontroller code is the ability to specify address space aliases. In many micros the top bits of the address specify how the cache is to be handled, and the disassembly breaks if the code eg. jumps into uncached address space. The way I see it there are two ways to do this. The simple way is to just specify an address mask, but this can not account for eg. on-chip registers that live in a special address range. The other way would be to be able to specify exact address ranges and how they alias each other.In the past I’ve abused the segment functionality to load the same code into the aliasing address ranges, but this is obviously far from ideal.

I think you can get some pretty darned creative results from people if you encourage them to pick personal projects they're interested in working on. Perhaps they can gain some enhanced insight into what needs to be done around the library from their time working the desk and interacting with the community.

I love the idea of scheduling everyone on the library staff to work shifts on public desks; it seems like a great, positive way to transform the culture and build relationships between staff who work in different roles and also between staff and users.
